What is the English Learner Advisory Committee?
Each California Public School from Kindergarten through grade 12, with 21 or more English learners must form a functional English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC). The ELAC is a committee for parents or other community members who want to advocate for English Learners.
Major FunctionThe purpose of the ELAC is to advise the principal and school staff on programs and services for English learners and the School Site Council on the development of the Single School Plan for Student Achievement. The ELAC also assists the school on other tasks listed below
- Provide written recommendations to the SSC regarding programs and services for EL students to support their academic
- Advise the SSC regarding programs and services for English learners based on student performance and parental involvement Student performance data includes, but is not limited to, the California English Learner Development Test (CELDT) results, Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) data, academic assessment data, the School Report Card, and the Superintendent’s Performance Meter. Parental involvement data includes, but is not limited to, parent surveys, School Experience Survey results, and evaluations from parent education classes regarding program placement and EL reclassification.
- Advise on the development of the SPSA, especially those sections related to English
- Assist in the review of the school’s language census, the assessment of achievement gaps of the EL student population, and with the development of the school’s program for EL
- Advise on efforts to make parents aware of the importance of regular school
- Assist with dissemination of information and materials related to all aspects of the District’s Master Plan for English
ELAC Meetings are set as follows: 1/21/2021 and every 2nd Thursday of each Month (2/11, 3/11, 4/15, 5/13, 6/10)
